I am a big wimp. I’ll admit it. I feel faint at the sight of blood, and the thought of any surgery – major or minor – makes me queasy. Which is why I have put off the whole wisdom teeth removal issue for as long as possible. Unfortunately, it’s becoming something that I have to do. I knew before I went in for my cleaning this morning that they were going to tell me that. Since my dentist doesn’t make money off of it (he refers people to one of two oral surgeons) I do believe him. I just don’t want to do it. Anyway, I can at least procrastinate just a bit longer – after all, who wants to be laid up for the better part of a week in the middle of the summer? – since my next downtime (no concerts or musicals) will be next January. Small reprieve, though, since I will get to spend the next six months absolutely dreading it.
I really think that dentists refer everyone who has dental insurance to get their wisdom teeth out. I really do. There’s such a thing as kickbacks. After all, a *huge* percentage of an oral surgeon’s business must come from wisdom tooth removal.
however, they do know that they won’t have repeat customers. i’d be more suspicious if the dentist was telling you to get braces.getting my wisdom teeth out wasn’t so bad, really it wasn’t. i do miss them now & again (they told the most wonderful stories…*sniff*), but i can definitely tell you that being put to sleep (or however you want to phrase it) made it much, much easier to deal with. (it also made it much, much easier for them to lose my earrings…don’t wear ones you care about heading in.)
