Project Spectrum 2.0 Update

Tomorrow is June 1st, which means Project Spectrum shifts from pink, yellow and green to red, black and metallics. I didn’t do such a great job with my projects for these past two months. Let’s see…

Socks:

One sock + one toe. I have no excuse for these, except that they’re my “purse project” that I pull out when I’m waiting somewhere with free hands. I guess I haven’t had to do any waiting that didn’t also involve occupying a toddler at the same time lately.

Back + part of one front. My excuse for this one? I’m not sure I like the color combo as much as I thought I would. I think I’d like stripes better than the squares. But as it’s about half done (I’ve finished the first front, started the second, and hidden some ends since I took the picture) I guess I’ll finish it anyway.

I’m also not feeling the love for the next set of Project Spectrum colors. My sock pal does like red though, and since I haven’t gotten yarn for that project yet (must do that soon!) those may have a bit of red in them. Other than that…no idea. Maybe I’ll finish up some of the abandoned projects from the last two color triads instead!

Lovely Flowers

Lisa taught a course on gum paste flowers last night. I had such fun making the flowers for my grandparents’ cake that I decided to take the class.

Here are few of the flowers I made:

There were also daffodils and tulips, but those never managed to get on stems. I have to say I really enjoy making flowers from gum paste. It’s like working with playdough, but with much more realistic results.

Memorial Day 2007

We walked down to Main Street for the Memorial Day parade this morning. (If you know where we live, you’ll realize that walking down to Main Street really isn’t that impressive – it’s walking back up that’s the tough part!)

Carrie enjoyed all the sights and sounds of the parade:

We spent the remainder of the day at my aunt & uncle’s house, where Carrie got to play with her cousin Ben. My uncle cooked the best chicken bbq ever, and the weather was absolutely beautiful.

The Etymology of the Word “Goosed”

We were at the mall last night, and as we were driving past one of the retention ponds we saw the oddest thing. There were several geese (as usual). And in the grassy area by the geese was a young couple with their barely walking-aged twins. One was still in the stroller, and the other – I kid you not – was trying to chase the geese.

I wanted to roll down my window and ask the parents if they had ever heard of the term “goosed”, and oh, by the way, did you know that geese can (and will) bite?!? There’s a picture for the baby book, little Jimmy getting nipped in the diaper by a goose. Sigh. I really wonder about people sometimes…

My Little Bowler

I signed Carrie up for bumper bowling this spring, and today was the last day. After the game there was a party with donut holes and juice, and each kid got a trophy and a balloon.

What was Carrie’s favorite part of the eight weeks of bumper bowling? The balloon.

Thirty-One Months Old!

Dear Carolyn,

Guess what? You’re as old in months as I am in years. (Yes, that means I’m old.) Every day I realize that the toddler is disappearing a little and leaving a preschooler in her place. Some days you shock me with how big you’re getting, how helpful you are, what you can do by yourself, the words you know.

I didn’t mention it last month, but you stopped nursing 10 days before you turned 2 and a half. I’m really happy that you stopped when you were ready – to be honest, I was ready too! Now one of these days we’re going to have to work on that binky habit. (Just promise me you’ll give it up before kindergarten?)

Mimi is still a regular fixture in our lives. Sometimes she goes away for a couple of days, but then she’ll suddenly be in the car needing to be buckled in, or be the one who’s splashing all the water out of the tub. And when you’re not playing with Mimi, you play with your dolls. I bought you trucks, balls, blocks…and guess what? You love your dolls best of all!

Lately, you sing all the time. You make up songs about what you’re doing right at that moment, you sing songs from the Wiggles – if there isn’t music playing you make it up yourself. I think it’s funny now that I was (just slightly) worried that you’d be tone deaf since you only recited the words to songs. Not that you get the tunes quite right, but there’s plenty of time for you to learn that!

Next month’s big challenge will be potty training. We started this week, and you’ve had some successes, some accidents, and some surprisingly long dry stretches. (I’m starting to suspect you’re part camel.) As part of this process, we bought a package of Dora panties today. Oh, how it pained me to buy something character related to put on your body, but they were the ones you picked out for yourself. (Then again, the diapers you wear have characters all over them too, so I suppose it’s nothing your bottom hasn’t seen before.) You are so excited about having big girl panties to wear.

So, my silly, funny, musical girl…another month gone, and you’re closer to three than two. There are days when I’d swear you’re two going on thirteen, but most of the time you really are a fabulous kiddo. It really is true: time flies when you’re having fun!

Love, Mommy

Happy Anniversary To Us!

Let’s see, eight years ago we were…eating cake? Or doing the bouquet toss?

Oh, how the years change things. Let’s see, we didn’t get each other cards – although we did get a Wii! – and instead of going out for a nice romantic dinner we grilled, invited my parents and my brother over, and went out for ice cream afterwards.

Now we have a completely hyper toddler bouncing around her room instead of being asleep.

Sounds like a good anniversary celebration to me!

ipod sock

My brother-in-law John requested an knit covering for his ipod nano. This is what I came up with:

ipodsock.jpg

It’s leftover sock yarn, borrowed from my mom (all of my leftover sock yarn seems to be of the pink and girly variety.) I just made up the pattern as I went along, trying it on my own nano-pod every now and then. I can’t believe these things actually sell at $30 for a six pack.

(Although I have to say this little article makes me almost want the official pack of socks, just for the lime green one…)

Wii, Wii, Wii, Wii, All The Way Home

In a completely impulsive moment, we bought ourselves a Wii. Our anniversary is next Tuesday (isn’t the modern gift for eight years a game console?) so we figured we’d splurge, since a) they’re really hard to come by, and b) they’re incredibly fun.

We played Wii bowling last night…I’m definitely better at Wii bowling than real-life bowling. Well, at least I can’t really remember ever bowling a 147, but it’s been a while since I actually bowled so maybe I have. I’m looking forward to learning how to play tennis. And there are plans for versions of Dance, Dance Revolution and Animal Crossing. Could be fun!

My sister-in-law Jeannie was the one who found them, because she was looking for one for herself. So she brought home two Wiis, and we had fun cracking jokes about “oui, oui!” and “wee, wee, wee, wee, all the way home”. OK, it was funny last night, anyway.

Anyone out there have a Wii? Any suggestions for a really good starter game for a 2 1/2 year old who’s never played a video game in her life? I imagine we can help her figure out the bowling, since my 4 year old niece was getting pretty good at it last night, but it’s always nice to have other options.

Knitting Meme

Julia just posted a knitting meme – and since I haven’t taken any recent pictures of my stuff-in-progress I figured I’d do this instead. Pictures tomorrow…maybe.
