Landscaping

When we moved in, we had big overgrown bushes in front of our house. They’ve only gotten bigger and more overgrown over the past nearly-13 years:

Before...excuse the morning sun glare!

And now they’re gone!

After. Hey look, we have windows on that side of the house!

I have a nice, clean blank slate (well, minus the overgrown burning bush that I couldn’t bear to have pulled out – we’ll try to trim it back aggressively for the next couple of years and see if we can’t tame it a bit) to work with. Time for a trip to the garden store!

Memorial Day Parade

Carolyn got to march in the Memorial Day Parade today with her Brownie troop. It looked like it was going to rain hard – and it did sprinkle for a while right before the parade – but it turned out to be perfect!

Memorial Day, 2012

And then the sun came out, and there was a little carnival. And where there are carnivals, there are face painters…

Carolyn chose strawberry ice cream with a cherry on top.
Anna went for lemon ice cream and patriotic sprinkles.

We did lots of walking, and it was hot, but we had a great day!

After a long, hot morning of walking, it's time to take a rest!

And then after dinner, we went to the local ice cream parlor. (Along with most of the rest of the town!)  Because, with ice cream painted on your cheek, what else would you have for dessert?!?

Mommy and her girls, after ice cream.

Strong Museum

Our school district appeared to be the only local one with all of today off – most everyone else had a half day – so we took a chance and went to Strong Museum.

Sisters!

I’m still trying to work with my new 28mm lens, and since this was one of the places it was hard to use the 50mm lens – I honestly get nervous backing away enough from my kids at Strong Museum – I figured it was a good test. I’m still not blown away, but I did get some decent photos.  (I know, I know…whining about a camera lens is kind of pathetic.)

Camera Talk

I am in love with my Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. It lives on my camera 99.5% of the time. But since I have a crop sensor on my camera, it’s a little long for indoors and I find that sometimes I even have to step out of the room my subject is in to fit everything into the frame.

So I did lots of research. I narrowed it down to two lenses and stalked Craigslist for them because new they were out of my budget. A couple of weeks ago I hit paydirt and bought a used 28mm f/2 lens.

But…I’m not thrilled. I feel like I should be blown away by the photos, and I can’t quite put my finger on why I’m not.

I guess for now I’m going to just have to take lots of pictures and hope I learn its quirks, right?

Last Day of Preschool

Anna before her last day of 3-year-old preschool.

It’s hard to believe that the preschool year is coming to an end…but today was the end-of-year celebration.  What a big girl Anna has become over the past year!
