Beach Day…Brrr!

Too bad it’s so chilly out there.  Apparently that 80 degree stretch of days we had in March was summer, and now it’s fall again.  But that didn’t stop Anna from wearing her yellow polka-dot swimsuit to Beach Day at school!

Not teensy-weeny, or a bikini, but yellow and polka dot for sure!

Science Day, School Birthday

Today at preschool it was Science Day, and we celebrated Anna’s summer birthday – the first of many early birthday parties, I’m sure! I got to stay and help make a volcano explode, have fun with magnets, and experiment with bubbles. I think we’re going to have to do some science experiments this summer along with our craft projects…

A Very Merry Un-Birthday!

Dance Observation

The girls had dance observation last night.  I’m really getting excited for the recital, the dances are so cute!

Stretching out!

I am very impressed with how much Carolyn has learned in this next level of dance.  Her class changes formations a lot more – no more standing in two lines and just doing different dance steps from there.  Anna is in the very littlest class, so their strongest asset is cuteness!

BFFs

Anna doesn’t get to have so many playdates with her best friend Nikki lately, but we did manage to get them together today…and they were wearing the same shirt!

Two cute kids!

Little House Shawls

One of my favorite things to knit are small shawls – they hug your shoulders and provide a little extra bit of warmth, show off a beautiful single skein of yarn, and there are so many wonderful patterns you would never need to knit the same one twice!  Unless, of course, you have two girls, and you stumble across a pattern called “Little House Shawl”.

Anna's shawl in "Lavender Fields"

These were fun (and super easy) to knit.  More details about these projects can be found here and here.

Room of Doom

My craft room has once again become cluttered and messy – I swear that the craft supplies have a big party every night and scatter themselves about randomly. So the craft room is the “Room of Doom” at the moment.

What’s the “Room of Doom” you ask?

Well, I made a nice poster to hang on the messiest room in the house:

Very doom-ish looking, no?

It is amazing how well this works. If I hang it on the entrance to a messy room, the kids obey the sign and pick something up when they go in. I don’t have to nag them to pick up, they both know what the sign means. Even better, if I hang it on the door to one of the kids’ bedrooms, everybody picks up when they go in. (This has a really nice side benefit – both girls have offered to help the other clean her room when it’s declared the “Room of Doom” and followed through.)

I’ve been using the “Room of Doom” sign and changing it’s location as needed for the past couple of months, and it still works. Is my house still messy? Of course! But it’s slowly getting better, because we’ve all gotten into better tidying up habits as a family.

Of course, declaring my craft room as the “Room of Doom” really just means that I’m intending to pick it up myself.  Everybody else in the house knows better than to go in there, even when it’s clean.  But what can I say?  The sign works on me, too!
