Anna’s First Christmas & Christmas Wrap-Up

Anna was, I think, the perfect age for a first Christmas. Not quite mobile enough to get into everything yet, but interested and engaged and awed by the lights, the colorful wrapping paper, and the fabulous new toys she could put in her mouth. She’s just thrilled beyond words to be able to roll all over and find a new toy wherever she lands that she can drool on and stuff in her mouth for a bit before she gets bored and rolls around in search of something new.

Carolyn got her Handy Manny tools and costume from Santa, and couldn’t be more thrilled with them. She’s been using the old-school Fisher-Price phone that Aunt Jeannie got for Anna to pretend to take fix-it calls (I get to play the caller – usually I have a squeaky baby that needs oil!) She also seems to really like her new Sleep Fairy CD – as in, for three nights in a row now she’s asleep before the CD ends. Oh, how I hope this lasts! And the Tinkerbell movie was also a big hit.

Denis and I? We treated each other to new Wii games: Mario Kart for him and Animal Crossing for me. Because, you know, we have so much free time to play games! But they’ve been a fun distraction at odd moments over the last few days.

All in all, this has been a very fun Christmas, and I’m looking forward to the next several weeks with not much to do or worry about beyond our everyday hectic lives!

4.2 Years Old!

Dear Carolyn,

Today you are four years and two months old! It’s also your Grandma’s birthday, and Christmas Eve! You are so excited about Santa. I can hear you bouncing around upstairs, almost an hour after we put you to bed. But you have to realize one very important thing: Santa doesn’t come until everyone in the house is sleeping!

20081205_olives.jpg

Sleep is one of those things that seem to be a struggle in every family with small children, and ours is no exception. Anna, for example, does not nap – even though she should. And you? You think you can manage with nine or ten hours of sleep in a night. Which is kind of like me managing on four or five hours of sleep. It can be done, but it doesn’t make for very pleasant days. The tough part is that instead of sleeping, you read. And I haven’t quite figured out on what planet a parent could possibly say “stop reading and go to bed!” Plus, since you’re related to me? It won’t work anyway. I used to sneak into my walk-in closet and turn on the light in there and read books until I fell asleep on a pile of clothes.

20081202_withMolly.jpg

So our days have been kind of cranky lately – you’re cranky because you’re up late reading. I’m cranky because I’ve been up late knitting, wrapping, baking, cleaning and decorating. So it hasn’t been the calmest month we’ve ever had, and we have had more than a few meltdowns – both of us have. And Anna looks at us like we’re both nuts. (Which is probably true, but she’s related to us, so she’ll be a nut too, right?)

20081221_silly.jpg

This month should be better. I promise to go bed at a reasonable hour each night so I can be a more pleasant mommy each day. And you’re going to go to bed earlier because tomorrow morning under the tree you will unwrap the gift of sleep: “The Sleep Fairy”, which is a guided relaxation CD for children. Here’s hoping it works, and that we can all sleep better for the new year!

Very Patient Puppies

So I’m a little late with everything to do with the holidays – including the decorating. Yesterday Carrie and I broke out the “family room” box and decorated the mantel:

I was fussing with the lights for a few minutes, and when I turned around, Carrie had decorated the dogs:

20081217_decorated.jpg

Considering the efforts we went through to get the dogs to wear those things for Carrie’s first Christmas I’m flabbergasted. Either the dogs have really mellowed over the past few years, or they’ve realized she’s above them in the pack order…

Christmas Pageant

Is there anything much cuter than 4 (and 5) year olds in little costumes singing? I thought not. Carrie was the Innkeeper’s Wife in the Christmas pageant this year, and had one of the only spoken lines in the whole play: “No room in the inn!”

20081217_pageant.jpg

Unlike last year, the baby doll didn’t come close to falling on the floor, and all the wise men were willing to give up their gifts. This year the kids signed along with singing one of the songs – I noticed when Carrie would practice it at home that she was signing. It was really, really adorable. I have to admit I’m going to miss this sort of thing when Carrie goes to public school next year, although I imagine there will still be some sort of holiday concerts? And of course Anna will get her turn in a few years.

Polar Opposites

I came to the conclusion pretty early on that my babies were two very different people, but lately I’ve noticed how very, very, different they are. Let’s see…

Carrie’s natural clock would have her go to bed at 10 PM and wake up at 8 AM.
Anna’s natural clock would have her go to bed at 7 PM and wake up at 7 AM.

Carrie has always needed a lot of light in her room to go to sleep.
Anna must have her room pitch black to go to sleep. (My current working theory on why she doesn’t nap EVER is because it’s too light outside. My current plan to correct this: move to the North Pole. I didn’t say it was a good plan…)

Carrie learned to roll onto her tummy, and immediately was like “thank God, I can finally go to sleep now!”
Anna learned to roll onto her tummy, and is like “oh my God, I can’t go to sleep now!”

Carrie took bottles of milk straight from the fridge, and to this day would prefer that all food and beverages be room temperature or colder.
Anna must have warmed milk – we’ll see after we start solid foods next month if those will have to be warmed as well.

Carrie is most definitely a soprano. We used to call her our beloved little Nazgul because of all the high-pitched screeching.
Anna is going to be an alto. Or maybe just a quieter child all around…?

It will be fun to see what other absolute differences there are between these two as they get older!

4.1 Years Old!

Dear Carolyn,

Today I told you that I’ve been writing letters to you on my blog, for you to read when you’re older. I wanted to know if that was OK with you, or if you would want me to stop. Now I don’t expect that you know what exactly it means, that these letters are on my blog, but you did like the idea that I was writing them, so I’m going to keep writing to you for now.

This month has brought a whole new set of challenges. In some ways you are so very advanced: you’re reading chapter books on your own, you are a kind, compassionate, polite little girl, you are so smart it’s scary sometimes. None of that’s a bad thing – in fact, your Daddy and I are so incredibly proud of you.

But I think because of all that you’ve been exposed to ideas and concepts that you aren’t emotionally ready for. You’ve been worried a lot lately – about things like who you will marry when you’re older, other people (mostly kids) laughing at you for something you’ve done, worn or said, and even death…your own. It’s challenging to try to calm your fears while not giving you other things to worry about in their place. (Note to self: trying to explain heaven? Not so helpful.)

20081026_ithaca.jpg

On a lighter note, you’ve overcome some pretty big challenges yourself this month. You had a little setback in remembering to use the potty when you needed to, but you got yourself back on track. You were also getting into the bad habit of chewing on your hair, but after realizing how hard it made it to get a brush through it, you made a conscious effort to stop doing it – as a semi-reformed nail biter I understand how hard it is to break habits like that!

And you really are such an extremely helpful, wonderful big sister. You heard Anna sneeze over the monitor one morning when you’d crawled into our bed sometime in the wee hours. I was not quite awake enough to get up, but you got out of bed, went into Anna’s room, and I heard you pull out a tissue and say “Here you go, baby!” – turns out you wiped your sister’s runny nose through the slats of the crib. Everyone keeps saying that things will change when Anna starts crawling and trying to play with your toys, but I really believe that if you’re pulling toys away from her it won’t be because you don’t want her to have them, but because you want to keep her safe.

20081104_sisters.jpg

And that brings us full circle… Carolyn, it’s my job to keep you safe, to worry about things so you don’t have to. I can’t pretend to know what your future holds, who you will marry – or if you even will. I can’t tell you that you won’t be laughed at. In fact, I can pretty much guarantee that at some point in your life you will be. And no one knows how much time they have in life. The only thing that is certain is that we all die eventually – just hopefully not until we’ve lived full, rich lives. So, your job is to stop worrying, and instead enjoy every moment life has to offer you.

Love, Mommy

My Mini Voters

Yesterday I took both girls with me to vote. I was well prepared for long lines and antsy kids, with Anna in the mei tai, a packed-to-the-brim purse backpack with diapers, wipes, crayons and paper, snacks, etc. on my back, and more than an hour extra before we had to leave for our dentist appointments.

Imagine my disappointment when we walked right in, signed the book, and went into the voting booth! (OK, not really. More like relief!) But even though Anna definitely won’t remember, and Carrie probably won’t, I can tell them both that they were in the booth with me for this historic election.

Pink Alligator Birthday Party

It’s a good thing we had an extra hour last night. That’s the only reason the cupcakes are anything approaching “fancy”. It’s kind of sad when you not only see the clocks roll back at 2 AM, but then see them the second time 2 AM strikes. Sigh. But, here is Carrie’s pink alligator cake, plus a cupcake river bordered by grass for her to swim through:

alligator_cake.jpg

A good time was had by all – if you don’t count a few tears over the piñata. I hate piñatas, but I caved because Carrie really wanted one. At least it used up a bunch of our leftover Halloween candy! We had pizza, grapes and a veggie tray. I think we went through almost three entire cans of olives, and Carrie was only part of the reason why…

20081102_olivefingers.jpg

Carrie really took my coaching seriously, about reading the card first and thanking the giver before opening the gift – to the point that the other kids were frustrated because it took her so long to get around to the ripping off the paper part!

20081102_birthdaygirl.jpg

And now, according to her, she is officially four. (Apparently, it doesn’t count until you have a birthday party!)

Princess Party

One of Carrie’s friends had a birthday party at a kids salon today. The girls all got to dress in princess outfits, have their hair put up in a fancy ‘do with glitter and hairspray, have their nails painted (she picked the pinkest pink nail polish I’ve ever seen!) and even have a tiny bit of makeup brushed on. Doesn’t Carrie look like a little princess?

20081101_princess.jpg

Hopefully she won’t start begging for eye makeup now the way she begs for “lipstick” (aka chapstick)!

My Tiny Teenager

My brother recently proposed to his girlfriend, so this morning I was telling Carolyn that soon she’d get to call Uncle Dan’s friend Genevra “Aunt Genevra”. She was all excited and talked a bit about their marrying kiss and living happily ever after. (Kid’s watched one too many Disney movies, methinks.)

Fast forward to dinner tonight…

She looked at me, and her little bottom lip started trembling, and she said in this heartbroken little voice, “Mommy, I don’t think I’m ever going to find a boy who will want to marry me when I grow up.”

I kind of thought I’d have a few more years before I had to start reassuring her about that! She’s apparently 4 going on 14.
