It’s A…

…another girl!

We had our 20 week ultrasound today, and the baby looks healthy, active, and completely immodest. So now we know that another little girl is going to join our family this summer!

Carrie wanted a brother, apparently, and was pretty disappointed to hear she would be getting a sister instead, but I think she’ll get used to it eventually. I’m excited because I always wanted a sister (not that I don’t love my brothers, of course!) and now I’ll get to vicariously experience that relationship with my girls.

Plus we’ll get to reuse some of those cute girl clothes that Carrie barely wore before she outgrew, and we can hand down her pink and purple tricycle eventually…

Now we just have to think of another girl name. And feel slightly bad for my poor nephew, who’s still the only boy among a sea of girl cousins!

Carrie Has A Secret…

20080122_big_sister.jpg

Yep, Carrie’s going to be a big sister this July. And she’s ecstatic, excited, and exhaustingly sweet about it!

I hope this explains why I’ve been so incredibly horrid about blogging. I’m so much more tired this time than last time. When I was pregnant with Carrie, I took naps, went to bed early, ate the exactly perfect diet and did everything by the book. This time? I can only apologize in advance to this poor child, who’s already been subjected to more caffeinated soda than can possibly be good for them and the least amount of sleep a pregnant woman can possibly get without falling over. I’m actually already 17 weeks along. I’ve been meaning to blog about this for more than a month, but by the time I manage to stay awake long enough to read discussion boards and catch up on everyone else’s blogs, I’m too tired to write a coherent post. (Technically, I doubt this one counts as coherent either, but I’m too tired to care!)

I have a funny story from when we told Carrie. It was shortly before her Christmas pageant, and I asked her if she knew what it meant to be a big sister. Blank look. So I tried again, and told her that when it’s summer again, when it’s hot, a new little baby is going to come live with us. And she gasped and excitedly said, “Is it the baby Jesus?!?” Uhhhh. Not exactly…

Every day she talks about her “newbabybrotherorsister” (really, she says it fast enough that it might as well be all one word) and how her new baby is going to sleep in her old crib, and she’s going to feed her new baby baby food, and her new baby will be too little to drink from her big girl cups and will have to use a baby bottle, and her new baby is going to play with all her old toys and wear her pink socks that her big girl feet are too big for and…you get the picture, I’m sure.

Carrie keeps asking to listen to the baby in my tummy, and she gives my belly hugs and tells the baby how much she loves him or her. It really is absolutely, wonderfully sweet. Although, I can’t wait to find out if she’s having a brother or a sister, to cut down on the “Mommy, I want a baby brother” requests, followed the next day by “Mommy, I want a baby sister!”

Last time I was sure I was having a girl, and I was right. This time? No clue. I don’t sleep enough to have dreams about boys or girls! But I will be very, very happy either way. And I think Carolyn will too. Especially if she gets to pick out the paint color for the newbabybrotherorsisters room. ;)

Happy Birthday, Denis!

I won’t disclose to the internet how old Denis is, just that he’s once again older than me! (As Carrie puts it, “Daddy, you’re an old man!” It’s too darn funny to hear a three-year-old saying that to try to correct it!)

Weekend Recap…

Let’s see…

We drove to Denis’ parents’ place on Thursday. First long car trip with a potty-trained toddler = the longest car trip ever. But we arrived with a dry kid and a dry car, so we did good. Of course, we also arrived with a sleeping kid who promptly woke up and wouldn’t go back to sleep until 1 AM. Sigh.

Friday we had a wedding to attend. We missed the ceremony because it was raining cats and dogs and traffic was crawling along at about 10 miles per hour. But we did make it to the reception, which was as interesting as all Long Island receptions are. (I’ll never understand the dancing during dinner thing…) This time we managed to pick up a sleeping kid from one house, put her in the car, put her in bed, and get away with it.

Saturday was spent at Denis’ sister Mary’s house. Carrie had such incredible fun with her cousins that she was begging to stay longer. It reminded me of all the times I’d hide in my cousin’s closet thinking that if my parents couldn’t find me they’d just leave without me when it was time to go. As if! And despite being in PJs and a night diaper, she didn’t fall asleep in the car, and in fact not until sometime after I finally fell asleep myself.

Sunday we got up bright and early, had breakfast and took an incredibly scenic route to Rhinebeck! Between the foliage, the wool, the llamas, and did I mention the wool?, I was in heaven. Carrie seemed to really enjoy it too, especially when we happened upon some jugglers and when I dragged myself away from the wool and took her on all the kiddie rides. More about Rhinebeck tomorrow when I take pictures of all my new goodies!

Sunday night was spent in a hotel where…guess what? The kid didn’t sleep. Well, she did, but not until 11:00. At least it was better than previous nights, right?

And we finally got home today after a nice scenic trip home, during which the kid (finally) slept. The dogs are happy to see us, and are very lucky not to be listed on Ebay today. Apparently one of them got into my half- quarter-finished Mystery Lace Stole and did quite a job on it, but my Mom and Van spent hours earlier today re-winding the yarn and picking dog fur out of it, and miraculously it’s unharmed. Lucky dogs.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

We went to a Red Wings game tonight with Carrie. I’m not entirely sure why we thought it would be a good idea to go to a 7:00 (that’s PM) game with a toddler who goes to bed at 8:00. Oh, and why we thought the promise of fireworks would keep her awake and happy until 11:00…well, she was awake, anyway. Luckily she fell asleep on the way home and stayed asleep – and I think when she wakes up in the morning she’ll remember that she did have a good time. But next time? Afternoon game, hold the fireworks.

On the plus side, I got some really cool fireworks pictures!

Pampered Chef

My Uncle John is a Pampered Chef consultant, so I hosted a party for him yesterday. The food was excellent: a sausage calzone (can’t find the link) and a berry salad, plus a berry tart for dessert. (And I was worried about what we were going to do with all the berries from Friday – they’ve pretty much all been eaten already!)

I can’t wait for all my neat new kitchen toys gadgets to arrive!

Graduation and Mother’s Day

Yesterday we attended my baby brother’s college graduation – which really makes me feel old! It was a lovely ceremony, with a brass quintet and bagpipes…though perhaps a smidge long!

Carrie tried to make it through the whole ceremony, but wound up falling asleep about 5 minutes before Michael walked across the stage. It’s been a long time since she fell asleep anywhere but her bed, and I’m ashamed to admit how much I enjoyed the warm weight of her head on my shoulder.

We went to another slightly less than kid-friendly restaurant for dinner, and I think Carrie had finally used up all of her exceptionally good behavior for the weekend. But after a major meltdown that required a trip to the ladies room for a change of scenery, she managed to come back to the table just in time for dessert – and then ate an entire slice of spumoni. I sort of expected her head to start spinning around like the kid in The Exorcist between the sugar and the lack of a proper nap.

Luckily for me, she instead slept for the entire 3 1/2 hour ride home, and continued sleeping in her bed all the way until a reasonable hour this morning. Happy Mother’s Day to me!

Sixty Years

My grandparents (on my mom’s side) have been married sixty years today. They let me take some anniversary pictures of them, and although I’m far from being a “real” photographer I really love how some of them came out, especially this one.

My mom and her siblings have been putting together a huge party to celebrate. I’m in charge of the cake and the slide show. I think at this point they’re both pretty much finished…which is good since the party is tomorrow night!

Lovely Vase

vase_by_dad.jpgMy mom gave my dad a lathe a couple of Christmases ago. Ever since then, their breakfast bar in their kitchen has been filling up with random turned pieces of wood – some functional, some decorative, but all lovely. My dad has made us a set of wooden bowls, and he gave Carrie a wooden egg-shaped kaleidoscope.

On a seemingly unrelated note, I was in Michael’s the other day and found some small silk flowers that I thought might look cute in Carrie’s play kitchen. But a quick trip around the store didn’t yield any plastic vases. Then I ended up in the ready-to-finish wood objects aisle…and had a thought. (Rare, but it happens sometimes.)

So I went to my parents’ house last night to work with my mom on a project, and mentioned to my dad that if he had some spare lathe time Carrie would really adore having a vase to put her flowers in near her kitchen. Two hours later I came home with this little treasure.

Isn’t it lovely? It’s wild cherry, and the grain pattern is just beautiful. I’m having a hard time putting it in Carrie’s kitchen – I want it in mine! I wonder if I could make a request for Mother’s Day for one of these for me? :)

Welcome Baby!

My cousin had a little boy today, Ryan Nicholas. He wasn’t due for a couple more weeks, so I haven’t even picked out yarn yet, let alone started knitting his sweater! I guess it’s time to hit the yarn shop!
